The feast of international football piped into homes and teashops during the World Cup season has not dented the sales of local sport magazines, distributors say. But dailies have prospered.

A spokesperson for Mya Thawdar book and journal distribution said there was no significant change in the sales of weekly sport journals during the World Cup period.

“We can watch matches on MRTV and Myawaddy easily, so nobody needs to buy weekly sport journals. Distribution of weeklies hasn’t changed for Yangon or the districts,” he said.

U Soe Aung, the owner of Moe Kaung Kin book and journal distribution in Kyauktada township, said the sports journal market is highly competitive.

“Every day, we have at least one sport title to distribute. If it doesn’t come out that day, nobody wants it, because other journals are already coming out. And there is no change in my distribution of popular weekly sport journals like Eleven, Inn Arr, 90 Minutes or Olympic,” he said.

Special dailies devoted to the World Cup were a different matter, he said.

“We have three daily sport journals during the World Cup, The Myanmar Times World Cup Daily, Inn Arr World Cup Daily and 7 Days World Cup Daily. In the first week, I had to distribute 80 copies of The Myanmar Times and 20 of 7Days sport. Then orders increased to about 150 of The Myanmar Times and 50 7Days in the second week of the tournament,” U Soe Aung said. Football fan Ko Kyaw Myo Tun said he prefered sport dailies to weeklies.

“In a daily, you can read predictions, expert opinions, match reviews and previews in real time,” he said.

Mandalay resident U Myo Myint said he spends more on sport journals than before.

“Before the World Cup, I spent K500 per week on a journal. Now it’s K1000 a day for three daily sport journals,” he said. – Han Oo Khin
