Seng Mai/ The Myanmar TimesNew plots are being opened at Chaungtha beach that will see development along the waterfront extend to 9 miles (14.4 kilometres), a spokesperson from the Chaungtha Zone Hoteliers Association said on February 26.

U Nyi Nyi Aung said the extension includes the building of new hotels at Shwe Thaung Yan sub-township.

“The project has started and some of the new hotel owners have begun landscaping their sites,” he said.

The local authorities and hoteliers began extending the beach into Shwe Thaung Yan sub-township in 2007 and have since been selling plots to developers. So far, 11 plots from 3 to 5.5 acres in size have been sold.

One hurdle has been the small stretch of hills that separate the new development from the rest of the beach and make the site less attractive to developers. Also, the road to the new development is bumpy and extremely dusty, recent visitors said.

U Kyaw Ye Aung, the manager of Shwe Hin Tha Hotel, which has bought plots at the new development, said the views of the hills would offer a different landscape for visitors than is normally the case.

“Shwe Hin Tha bought 4 acres and is landscaping there. We expect construction will be completed by the end of the year,” he said, adding that the company was targeting foreign visitors with the project.

The new development is considerably cheaper than the existing real estate – 1 acre is selling for K40 million, compared to K1.5 billion at the main beach, several hoteliers said.

Another advantage of the new zone is its abundance of space, said another hotel manager.

“Here each hotel has at least 2 acres,” said U Nyunt Wai, the manager of See Sim Hotel. – Kyaw Hsu Mon
