Tour guides prepare for ASEAN competition

Two tour guides have been selected to take part in the first ASEAN Tourist Guide Contest, to be held in the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta on September 27-28.

U Nay Win Oo, a freelance English-language tour guide, and an employee of state-run Myanmar Travels and Tours were chosen to attend the contest, U Nyi Nyi from the Myanmar Tourist Guide Association (MTGA) said last week.

“The Ministry of Hotels and Tourism and MTGA selected these two people to take part in the contest,” he said, adding that they were chosen based on their English fluency and ability to represent the tourism industry.

U Nay Win Oo said he was studying up on ecotourism and the environment to prepare for the event, which is being organised by the Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

“This is a good chance to get experience from guides in other ASEAN countries. It’s not only about competing,” he said.
Two guides from each of the 10 ASEAN countries will take part in the contest, at which five prizes will be on offer. Guides will undergo both a written and oral examination.
