What's On: December 9-15

From gastronomic adventures to unmissable events, we’ve got your social life sorted for the next seven days.

EAT
50th Street
8-11:30pm on December 9

After nearly two years at 50th Street, affable manager Sammy Grill is cutting loose in the only way she knows how: with a blow-out party. Rumours are swirling about who will take over the iconic Yangon bar next month, but for at least one more night, 50th Street will deliver its classic mix of live music in a pub atmosphere. Come listen to The Peacists, General Tiger Gun & No U Turn and have a pie (or two).

LEARN
MKS Room at The Rough Cut
6-8pm on December 9

It can be hard to keep up with all the buzzwords that come with life in a developing country: Seemingly everyone you meet is “building capacity” in some way, or “innovating tech solutions”. For those looking to get a hand on social entrepreneurship beyond the catchphrases, check out the free screening of HORiZONS: Waynak (Where are you?), a webdoc about the refugee crisis in the near East and Europe, at Rough Cut. The screening will be followed by a discussion panel.

DO
Myami Vice
December 10-11
in Letkokkon

Just 90 minutes south of Yangon, where the delta lowlands meet the Andaman Sea, the once-palacial Orchid Adventure Shore Resort resides in relative disrepair. But where some might see a failed business and likely snake pit, Full Stop’s Charlie Artingstoll sees the recipe for a wild “24-hour party of the lowest calibre”. Expect to bump and grind to international DJs Superstar Panda and Mirror Image under the palm trees. For K40,000, you’ll have round-trip transport and accomadation at the resort – though buyers beware, the overnight stay is only for those “not a princess”. For tickets, contact Full Stop on Facebook or visit the Orchid Hotel.
