Free beer is sweet music to any man’s ear, and what better way for 50th Street bar and restaurant to officially announce its reopening on November 20 than to offer Tiger draught on the house.

50th Street – a Yangon institution since its launch in 1997 – is already open for business, but the big relaunch party kicks off at 8pm with the aforementioned free beer available for the first hour, and happy hour prices all night.

The bar’s original attraction – and beauty – is that it’s one of the few real pubs in Yangon, and recent renovations have made it even better.

The venue has been improved to feature a host of new attractions: Wifi internet, super-chilled Tiger beer, multiple plasma-screen televisions and a new coffee machine.

A new chef has also been hired, and the menu has been updated. Meanwhile, the secluded, intimate booths have been refurbished with lovely black leather.

There are now enough TVs downstairs that at least one of the screens will be within your line of sight, whether you’re playing pool, kicking back at the bar or sitting at a table near the front windows.

The TVs have been hooked up to a new satellite feed, which will show sports like rugby and cricket, as well as the top-flight English Premier League and Champions League football matches. For special sporting occasions, a projector will be called into service to create the perfect viewing environment.

Other future draw cards will include quiz nights, art and photo exhibitions, pool competitions – on the newly resurfaced and painstakingly levelled table – and live music performances.

But why relegate 50th Street to only nocturnal leisure? The venue also serves as a café with plenty to offer during the daylight hours, and it’s here that the free wireless internet access, coffee machine and juices and smoothies come to the fore.

Just like before there will be lunchtime specials, with the addition of sandwich deliveries as well.
