City hall officials face suit for canceling event

Farmers from the Mandalay Region’s Pyin Oo Lwin township said they will sue the township development committee for failing to host an event at City Hall despite being paid rent for the premises.

They said that they had paid a down payment for rental of the City Hall premises to hold a meeting with officials to discuss matters relating to farming, but the committee cancelled the event in the last minute.

Local farmers from Pyin Oo Lwin hired the hall by paying down payment to the development committee to hold a meeting on May 16 with a mediator group which was formed by the regional government to discuss matters pertaining to confiscated farmlands and court cases related to the disputes.

But the development committee refunded the down payment and told that the hall could not be rented in the evening of May 15.

Local farmer U Sai Kyaw Lay, said that the last minute cancelation had led to losses for the farmers.

Farmers and the mediator group then held a press conference and said they would file a suit against those who were responsible for the cancelation.

“About three or four months ago, regional authorities called a press conference and urged farmers to seek solutions through negotiations and not through protest.

U Sai Kyaw Lay said, “That’s why we were planning to hold this meeting. We have no intention to instigate unrest. We are were told that the hall was not available for hire when the meeting was about to start. This is a great loss for us.

Because of this, we will file a lawsuit against the township development committee after consulting with lawyers,” he said.

The development committee had agreed to hire out the hall at K 320000 and K120000 was paid as down payment.

But the development committee cancelled the deal when the event was about to take place.

The move resulted in a loss of around K10million.

Ko Lin from mediator group for farmers’ and people’s affairs, said “The plan to bring a suit is not only to get back the money but because the act is also in violation of citizens’ rights”.
