Extreme weather hits parts of Kachin State

No injuries were reported last week as a result of snow, strong wind and hail in some areas of Kachin State.

A report published in state-run media on January 21 said that Pan Wa sub-township in Chipwi township and Khaung Lan Phoo in Putao township experienced heavy snow and strong winds on the evening of January 16. At 1am on January 17, one foot of snow was measured in Khaung Lan Phoo. Kyemon reported that Bhamo experienced strong winds, rain and hail on the evening of January 16.

A 30-year-old resident of Bhamo’s Min Kon quarter said the hail fell about 9pm. “It lasted about 10 minutes. I have heard there was some damage to vehicles which were not stored under cover but there was no major damage to homes,” he said. “We rarely receive hail here. I can remember it happening once when I was a child.”
