Ex-President hosts dinner to celebrate award

Former President U Thein Sein, who received the Grand Prize of the 3rd Asia Cosmopolitan Awards from the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), hosted a dinner of honour at Kempenski Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw on March 19.

“I won this prize thanks to my comrades,” U Thein Sein said in his speech at the dinner.

The former president also spoke about the democratic transition in Myanmar, the peace process and economic growth in the country.

He said there was a peaceful transfer of power to the government elected by the people and lauded the peace process as a foundation for national reconciliation.

“Such a successful change is very rare in Southeast Asia,” he said.

He also said some accomplishments were made in the economic sector and there have been reforms in other sectors.

The dinner of honour was attended by Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services Vice-Senior General Soe Win, Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) chair U Than Htay, former USDP Union ministers and former regional and state chief ministers, among others.
