Women jailed for organising begging ring

Two women from Dala township have been sentenced to one year imprisonment for organising children to beg for money.

Daw Tin Nyo, 45, and Daw Than Than Oo, 55, pleaded guilty to breaching section 66(c) of the Juvenile Act at the Kyauktada Township Court on October 11.

The women were arrested, along with three children, near the corner of Bo Aung Kyaw Road and Merchant Road in Kyauktada township following an investigation into organised begging.

The investigation traced the begging ring to Narnattaw Care Centre, where staff from Yangon City Development Committee’s Security and Discipline Department questioned about 30 children. One child at the centre told them that two women from Yawmingyi Road in Dala’s Kyansittha quarter had asked the children to go around the city to beg. The children gave their earnings – about K3000 a day – to the women at rendezvous points around the city.
