Dreams of the big leagues

Wins today for Mahar United and United of Thanlyin would see both sides confirm their place in the Myanmar National League-2 leaving Thihadeepa and City Stars FC to fight it out for the third and final spot.

However victories for Thihadeepa and City Stars in their second of three round-robin matches would throw the competition wide open with all to play for in the final games on January 9.

All sides involved showed played youthful-looking sides as Mahar United – owned by famed traditional dancer Phoe Chit – beat Thihadeepa – the new name for Thanylin Technological University FC at Yangon’s Salin Stadium 2-1.

In the other game on January 5, United of Thanlyin overcame City Stars – a team formed out of former university league side Doctors and Friends – 1-0 at Yangon’s Padonmar Stadium.

The top three sides in this qualifying round will play in the 2016 MNL-2, with its expanded roster of 12 teams. Fixtures for Myanmar’s second-tier league begin next week on January 15. The bottom side will join the new amateur MNL-3 planned to start in mid 2016.
