The games take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital, from August 19-30.

Myanmar is keeping its expectations modest, fancying itself to win about seven gold medals from sports like football, wushu, chinlone and sepak takraw.

In 11 disciplines, besides those mentioned above, the nation is hoping to win silver or bronze medals and still in 11 others it will be competing not expecting to win medals but give its athletes a chance to gain valuable international experience.

The 29 events Myanmar will be competing in are aquatics, archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, billiard and snooker, bowling, boxing, cricket, cycling, fencing, hockey, football/futsal, golf, gymnastics, judo, karate, petanque, sailing, shooting, sepak takraw and chinlone, squash, taekwondo, table tennis, lawn tennis, triathlon, volleyball, weightlifting and wushu.

It’s not competing in muaythai, pencak Silat, equestrian, ice hockey, ice skating, lawn bowls, netball, rugby and water Ski.

The official draw for all competitions was held in Kuala Lumpur last Saturday and in football Myanmar has been paired in the same group as Malaysia, Singapore, Laos and Brunei – Group A – while Group B comprises of reigning SEA Games champions Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Timor-Leste and Philippines.

The luck of the draw favours Myanmar. Its main rival in the group stage will be Singapore so it won’t be meeting Thailand or Vietnam, the football powerhouses in the region, until the semi-final stage.

In sepak takraw, the main gold prospect of which chinlone is part, Myanmar is in Group B with Malaysia and Brunei. The nation is expecting two golds from chinlone and three from sepak takraw – quadrant events in particular.

In volleyball, Myanmar’s women team is in the same group as Thailand and Indonesia – Group A – while the men’s team is bracketed with Malaysia, Cambodia and Thailand.

Myanmar will be sending a 400-strong contingent to compete in the KL Games.
