FIFA boss to visit Myanmar mid-March

The president of FIFA, football’s international governing body, is set to visit Myanmar on March 15 to attend the opening ceremony of Mandalay Football Academy.

U Zaw Zaw, president of the Myanmar Football Federation (MFF), said the visit – the first time a FIFA president has visited Myanmar in its 64-year association – would be a tremendous accomplishment.

“I am so proud that Mr Blatter will visit and it will focus worldwide attention on us and the MFF. This is a good chance for us to get further FIFA support in coming years,” he said.

FIFA supports the MFF financially by providing US$250,000 a year in funding, and pledged $400,000 to help the development of the Mandalay football academy and another $250,000 for an academy in Ayeyarwady Region, said the MFF’s general secretary, U Tin Aung.

“Mr Blatter will attend the opening ceremony of the Mandalay Football Academy on March 15 and will visit the MFF office on March 16,” he said.

During his two-day visit, Mr Blatter will also review the offices and functions of the MFF, a federation spokesperson said.

U Tin Myint Aung, manager of Ayeyarwady United FC, said he was looking forward to asking for some advice from the FIFA president.

“We can get some good ideas about promoting and lifting football standards here and I’m eagerly awaiting the visit,” he said.
